The Complete Guide to Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in 2026
For thousands of Indian students, studying in Canada is not just about getting a world-class education—it is the first step toward Canadian Permanent Residency. The bridge between graduation and PR is the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
However, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced strict new rules for 2026. Choosing the wrong college or program can now completely disqualify you from receiving a PGWP.
What is the PGWP?
The PGWP is an open work permit. It allows international graduates from participating Canadian post-secondary institutions to gain valuable Canadian work experience. "Open" means you can work for almost any employer in Canada, anywhere in the country, without needing a job offer beforehand.
Crucially, Canadian work experience gained through a PGWP heavily boosts your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for Express Entry PR applications.
The New 2026 Rules: Public vs. Private Colleges
The most critical update for students: Not all Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) make you eligible for a PGWP.
Students attending private colleges that operate under public-private curriculum licensing agreements are no longer eligible for a PGWP. If your goal is to stay and work in Canada, you must enroll in a public university, a public college, or a master's/doctoral program.
How Long is the PGWP Valid?
The length of your PGWP depends entirely on the length of your study program:
- Programs under 8 months: Not eligible for a PGWP.
- Programs between 8 months and 2 years: The PGWP is usually valid for the exact length of your program (e.g., a 1-year certificate yields a 1-year PGWP).
- Programs 2 years or more: The PGWP is issued for 3 years.
- Master’s Degrees: Regardless of the length of the Master’s program (even if it's only 1 year), graduates are now eligible for a 3-year PGWP.
The Pathway to PR
Once you secure your PGWP, your immediate goal should be to accumulate one year of continuous, full-time skilled work experience (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3). This one year makes you eligible for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry, significantly increasing your chances of securing Permanent Residency.
