Step-by-Step Canada PR Process from India

The most popular pathway for Indian professionals to secure Canadian Permanent Residency is the Express Entry system, specifically under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). Here is the exact process from start to finish.

01

Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

Before applying, your Indian degrees must be evaluated by a designated body like WES (World Education Services) or IQAS to prove they are equivalent to a Canadian credential.

02

Language Proficiency Test (IELTS / CELPIP)

You must take a language test. For Indian applicants, the IELTS General Training is most common. You should aim for a "CLB 9" (Listening: 8.0, Reading: 7.0, Writing: 7.0, Speaking: 7.0) to maximize your points.

03

Calculate Your CRS Score

Your profile will be given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score out of 1200 based on age, education, and experience. Use our free calculator to estimate your score.

04

Enter the Express Entry Pool

Create your Express Entry profile online. Your profile remains active in the pool for 12 months.

05

Receive Invitation to Apply (ITA)

IRCC conducts draws roughly every two weeks. If your score is above the cutoff, you will receive an ITA. You then have 60 days to submit a complete application.

06

Medical Exam & Police Clearance (PCC)

You must undergo a medical exam by an IRCC-approved panel physician in India and provide a Police Clearance Certificate from the Regional Passport Office.

07

Visa Stamping & Landing

Once approved, you receive your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and submit your Indian passport for visa stamping. You are now ready to fly to Canada!

Processing Time from India

Under the Express Entry system, standard processing times aim for 6 months from the date you submit your final application (after receiving an ITA). However, the total journey depends on your preparation:

  • Pre-ITA Phase (1-3 months): Gathering ECA, passing IELTS, creating profile.
  • Pool Phase (Varies): Waiting for a draw to hit your score. This can take days or months.
  • Post-ITA Phase (60 days max): Getting medicals, Indian PCC, and uploading documents.
  • IRCC Processing (Approx. 6 months): Background checks and final decision.

Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) for Indians

Indian applicants must provide a PCC issued by their Regional Passport Office (Passport Seva Kendra) or the local police station. A PCC issued by the Passport Office is generally preferred by IRCC.

Crucial Note: Do not apply for your Indian PCC too early! It is only valid for 6 months. It is highly recommended to apply for it only *after* you receive your Invitation to Apply, or if you know your CRS score guarantees you an ITA in the next draw.
