New Zealand Residency Pathways

New Zealand's Green List and Skilled Migrant Category are the two main routes to permanent residency.

Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

Points-Based

The primary pathway for skilled workers. A points-based EOI system that scores you on age, qualifications, work experience, and employment in New Zealand.

  • 100+ points on the SMC points grid
  • Job offer or skilled employment in NZ preferred
  • Age 55 or under at ITA stage
  • Recognised qualifications + 2 years relevant experience

Green List (Direct PR)

Fastest Route

Certain high-demand occupations (doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers) can apply directly for Permanent Residence without first obtaining a work visa.

  • Occupation on the Green List Tier 1 or Tier 2
  • Tier 1 = direct PR; Tier 2 = work visa then PR
  • Relevant qualification and registration
  • Job offer from a NZ employer in most cases

Work Visa → Residence

Staged Pathway

Many workers enter on an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) and later qualify for Skilled Migrant or Residence from Work pathways.

  • Job offer from an AEWV-accredited employer
  • Relevant skills and qualifications
  • Minimum pay threshold met
  • Transition to PR typically after 2 years

General Eligibility Criteria

Age 55 or under when you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
Qualifications at NZ Level 3–6 (or assessed equivalent)
Minimum 2 years of relevant professional work experience in the past 10 years
Occupation on the Long-Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) or Green List
