Canadian Citizens

Citizens living in Canada or abroad can sponsor eligible relatives.

Permanent Residents

PRs living in Canada can sponsor eligible relatives to join them.

Registered Indians

Persons registered under the Indian Act who are not Canadian citizens or PRs.

Who Can Be Sponsored?

IRCC allows sponsorship for specific family relationships only.

Sponsor Eligibility Requirements

✓Be a Canadian citizen, PR, or registered Indian aged 18 or older

✓Meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) threshold for your family size

✓Sign an undertaking to financially support the sponsored person (3–10 years depending on relationship)

✓Not be in receipt of social assistance (except disability)

✓Not have defaulted on a previous sponsorship undertaking

✓Not be bankrupt or convicted of certain serious offences

Application Process

STEP 01

Confirm Eligibility

Check that both sponsor and applicant meet IRCC requirements.

STEP 02

Gather Documents

Proof of relationship, financial documents, identity documents, police certificates.

STEP 03

Submit Application

File the sponsorship application to IRCC (or IRCC visa office if applicant is outside Canada).

STEP 04

Biometrics & Medical

Sponsored person completes biometrics and a medical exam.

STEP 05

IRCC Processing

Processing times vary by relationship and country of origin (6 months to 2 years).

STEP 06

PR Confirmed

Applicant lands in Canada and receives PR status.
