How to Apply for the Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) 2026
Germany has officially launched one of the most progressive immigration policies in its history: the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte). Designed to combat severe skilled labor shortages, this points-based system allows non-EU citizens to move to Germany to look for work without needing a pre-existing job offer.
What is the Germany Opportunity Card?
The Opportunity Card acts as a sophisticated job seeker visa. It permits highly skilled professionals to legally reside in Germany for up to one year to secure permanent employment. Unlike traditional visas, it also permits you to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) while you search for your primary career role, significantly lowering the financial burden of relocation.
The Points System Explained
To qualify, you must score a minimum of 6 points in the official assessment. Points are awarded based on:
- Qualification Recognition (4 Points): If your foreign degree or vocational qualification is recognized in Germany.
- Work Experience (up to 3 Points): 3 points for 5+ years of experience, or 2 points for 2+ years.
- Language Skills (up to 3 Points): Proficiency in German (A2/B1/B2) scores high. Even good English skills (C1) will earn you 1 point.
- Age (up to 2 Points): Applicants under 35 receive 2 points; those aged 35-40 receive 1 point.
- Prior Residency (1 Point): If you have legally resided in Germany for at least six months previously.
Financial Requirements: The Blocked Account
While the Opportunity Card grants you access to the German job market, the government requires proof that you can sustain yourself financially. You must open a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto).
As of late 2024, you are required to show at least €1,027 per month for your planned stay. For a full year, this equals €12,324. Alternatively, you can show a formal declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a resident in Germany.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to speak German?
Not necessarily! If you possess a C1 level in English and score points in other areas (like age and experience), you can still qualify. However, basic German (A1/A2) significantly improves your point score and employability.
Can I bring my family?
The primary purpose of the Opportunity Card is job seeking. Generally, family reunification is not permitted during the Opportunity Card phase. Once you secure a permanent employment contract and transition to an EU Blue Card or standard work visa, you can then sponsor your spouse and children.
How long does the process take?
Processing times vary by consulate, but generally range from 4 to 8 weeks after submitting a complete application with your blocked account confirmation.
