IELTS vs. PTE vs. OET: Which English Test is Easiest for Immigration?

IELTS vs PTE vs OET Comparison

Before you can even think about filing a visa application for Canada, Australia, the UK, or New Zealand, you need to prove your English proficiency. But the big question thousands of Indians ask every day is: "Which test should I take?"

The answer depends entirely on your destination country, your profession, and your personal test-taking strengths. Let's break down the three major options.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS is the grandfather of English proficiency tests and remains the most widely accepted exam globally. It's offered in two formats: Academic (for university admissions and professional registration) and General Training (for immigration and work visas).

  • Format: Paper-based or computer-based. The Speaking test is always conducted face-to-face with a human examiner.
  • Scoring: Band scores from 1 to 9. Most immigration programs require a minimum of Band 6.0 to 7.0.
  • Results: Typically available in 13 days (paper) or 3-5 days (computer-based).
  • Best For: Applicants who prefer speaking to a real person rather than a microphone, and those comfortable with traditional exam formats.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English)

PTE Academic has exploded in popularity among Indian applicants, largely because it's entirely computer-based and uses AI scoring, which many find more predictable and less subjective than IELTS.

  • Format: Fully computer-based. You speak into a microphone; AI evaluates your response.
  • Scoring: Scored on a scale of 10-90. A score of 65 roughly equals IELTS 7.0.
  • Results: Available within 48 hours—the fastest of all three tests.
  • Best For: Fast typists, people comfortable with computers, and those who feel nervous speaking to a human examiner. Also ideal if you need quick results for an urgent application deadline.

OET (Occupational English Test)

OET is the specialized choice, designed exclusively for healthcare professionals—nurses, doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and veterinarians.

  • Format: The Reading and Listening sections test general English, but the Writing and Speaking sections use healthcare-specific scenarios (e.g., writing a referral letter, taking a patient history).
  • Scoring: Graded from A (highest) to E. Most nursing boards require a minimum of Grade B.
  • Best For: Nurses and doctors migrating to Ireland, UK, or Australia. If you're a healthcare worker, OET is dramatically easier because the content is familiar to your daily work.
